Aspen University – COM 100: Introduction to Communications – Module 3 Assignment

Listening seems like such a simple task, yet in actuality, it is a skill of critical significance in all aspects of our lives- from maintaining our relationships to getting our jobs done to taking notes in class, to figuring out which bus to take to the airport (Lumen, 2021). Kobiruzzaman
states scholars have identified four types of listening styles using the mnemonic PACT, peopleoriented, content-oriented, action-oriented, and time-oriented (2019). According to Kingsley Grant, a style of listening is a way to make sense out of something someone says (n.d.). After
looking back at my personal and professional interactions, I can see my listening style is peopleoriented. People-oriented listeners tend to focus more on feelings and emotions.

Finding what I have in common with the speaker seems more relevant to me than the topic of their message. I know this to be true because I am a caring person. According to Gerber and Murphy, peopleoriented listeners are supportive, loving, and understanding (2021). When I listen to someone, I want to know how they feel and how their topic affects them, not just about their subject. I care about making the speaker feel comfortable and safe and create a space where people can make  themselves vulnerable without fear of being cut off or judged (Gerber & Murphy, 2021). Adina
Miron describes people-oriented listeners as those who emphasize motivation, workers’ wellbeing, teamwork, and clear communication (2019). Having chosen teaching, then nursing, and now realizing I’d love to work in some sort of substance abuse or mental health area, I see I fit
into the people-oriented group. I care about the speaker’s feelings, and I tend to focus more on that than their message at times.
There can also be weaknesses to being a people-oriented listener. Focusing only on their emotions can stop me from hearing what they are trying to say precisely.

there be a balance not just between the pros and cons of people-oriented listening but between all four styles of listening?

As for the rest of the listening styles, there are the other three we will take a brief look at now. Remember that mnemonic, PACT?
