LEVEL OF STRUCTURE + ORGANISATION Atoms/Molecules > Cellular Level > Tissue Level > Organ Level > Organ System > Organism
NECESSARY LIFE FUNCTIONS • Boundaries between internal/external environments • Movement • Responsiveness: Sense/response to stimuli • Digestion • Metabolism: Chemical reactions of cells • Excretion: Waste Removal • Reproduction • Growth
HOMEOSTASIS • Maintains internal environment despite change outside • Dynamic (always changing) state of equilibrium • Continuous monitoring/regulation of many variables (variables) • Main players
• Receptor (sensor) (Affect) • Monitors environment • Responds to stimuli
• Control Centre • Determines set point that variable is maintained • Receives input from receptor • Determines response
• Effector • Receives output from control centre • Provides response • Response acts to up/down the stimuli (feed work)
NEGATIVE FEEDBACK • Response: Reduces/negates original stimuli
• Examples: • Regulation, body temperature • Regulation, blood volume by ADH (enzyme)
POSITIVE FEEDWORK • Response: Enhances/exaggerates original stimuli • May exhibit cascade/amplifying effect • Usually controls infrequent events: e.g. Platelet plug formation + blood clotting
