Consumer Chemistry (CHE 105)

Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to experimentally determine
the empirical formula of Magnesium Oxide.
Hypothesis: I can guess from my prior experience that the
empirical formula will be MgO.
Materials
 Crucible and Cover
 Ring Stand
 Small Iron Ring
 Clay Triangle
 Bunsen Burner
 Crucible Tongs
 Magnesium Ribbon ( 30cm )
 Scissors
 Sand Paper
 Striker
 Electronic Balance
 Safety Goggles
Procedure
1. Set the ring so it’s about 3 to 4 cm ( about two fingers )
above the Bunsen burner and put the clay triangle in place

2. Clean and dry a crucible and lid and place them on a clay
triangle
3. Heat the apparatus with the Bunsen burner until the bottom
of the crucible is a dull red color. You will have to adjust the
burner flame so that it has a blue inner cone and makes a
light rustling sound. The tip of the inner blue cone is the
hottest part of the flame, and should contact the crucible
4. Turn off the turn and allow the crucible to cool to room
temperature.
5. Before you begin, practice using the crucible tongs to lift and
place the lid on the crucible
