n GTPAL, the GTPAL is described by numbers separated by hyphens.

The G refers to the number of times the client has been/is pregnant.

The T refers to term births (after the completion of 37 weeks gestation).

The P refers to premature births (20 to the completion of 37 weeks gestation).

The A refers to abortions (spontaneous or elective) before 20 weeksThe L refers to currently living children

Gravida – Term – Preterm – Abortions – Living Children = G-T-P-A-L

In an obstetrical history the gravida (G) and para (P) status of a woman is often written in abbreviated form.

Where:Gravida is the number of pregnancies a woman has had. A multiple gestation counts as a single pregnancy.

Para is the number of completed pregnancies beyond 20 weeks gestation (whether viable or nonviable).

A multiple gestation counts as a single birth.
