Intro To Human Environ Relat (COGST 1500)

Environmental Cognition in Buildings
 Background information
 Schematic organization
o Internal consistency of floors and wings
 If there is a lot of homogeneity, it is difficult to figure out where you’re going.
o Why hospitals are often are really confusing.
o Heterogeneity allows for distinct recognition of spaces.
 Naturalistic Experiments
o Homogeneous academic building interior is repainted so that each floor now had a
distinctive color.
o Adding heterogeneity and distinctiveness, even if its not that dramatic (color).
o People unfamiliar with the building given a tour were more likely to remember
how to get around.
 Focal Objects
o Visual access to key locations helps you orient yourself
 grand staircase
 view to upper and lower floors
 between major destinations
 Signage
o direction of signs
o text contrast with background and size
 black and white is more effective than black and yellow
o a good signage system will have a plan
 using information to help people understand and make sense out of things
o most people read from left to right

Human Factors & Ergonomics
Comfort  Human Factors and Ergonomics  Health and Safety  Efficiency

How do you design something in order to make it comfortable and easy to use?
Cognitive Ergonomics Principles
 Misaffordance = to what extent is their overlap in the model that the designer has in their
minds when they are making something, and the model that the user has in mind
o How do they overlap and map on to each other?
 Legibility- can you see it? Can you understand how to use it? /visibility
 Feedback- when you act on it, is there some relatively clear and direct reaction that tells
you what the consequences are
Anthropometrics and Biomechanics
 “It is easier to bend metal than to twist arms.”
 Analogous to the cognitive ergonomics, except that in this case the mind aspect is the body.
 What do you have to do with your body in order to use the environment? What is going on
with your body as your using the environment?
 Anthropometrics: measurement of the body
 Biomechanics examines how machines operate and examines the mismatch between the
anthropometrics and the environment
