Acetaminophen; Tylenol
Classification:
– Nonnarcotic, Nonopioid Analgesic (pain reliever), Antipyretic (fever reducer)
Action and therapeutic effect of the drug:
Acetaminophen inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins that may serve as mediators of pain
and fever, primarily in the CNS. Has no significant anti-inflammatory properties or GI
toxicity.
Dosages and Routes:
Mild to moderate pain, fever:
1. PO (Adults and Children > 12 yrs): 325-650mg q6 or 1g 1-4 times daily or
13000mg q 8 hr.
2. PO (Children 1 – 12yrs): 10-15mg/kg PO q6h as needed. Not to exceed 5
doses/24hrs.
3. PO (Neonate): 10-15mg/kg/dose q 6-8hr as needed.
4. PO (Infants): 10-15mg/kg/dose q 6hrs as needed. (Not to exceed 5
doses/24hrs)
