Leadership And Management In Nursing (NRS 411)

NRS 411 – QI Paper – Grade: A

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is one of the Qualitative Measures Staten
Island University Hospital (SIUH) uses to implement evidenced based practice for the
newborns in their maternal child units. This paper will detail some of the important aspects of
this initiative that is designed to improve care of mothers and newborns, providing them the
best possible start in life. This paper will address the benefits of this initiative and leadership
challenges associated with the implementation of the BFHI.
Quality Program
Quality management with the goal to improve nursing care has been a cornerstone in
nursing practice since Florence Nightingale. Monitoring can occur by many standards that are
generated from: professional organizations, federal and state governments, state licensure or
private accreditation and research (White, Weiss & Tappan, 2007). The National Database of
Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) is a quality program, institutions can participate in to
compare their organizations against other institutions, both regionally and nationally (NDNQI
APGS, 2014). The NDNQI currently has no measures for women’s and perinatal nursing care
but the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neo-natal Nurses (AWHONN) is working
with the ANA to develop measures for this population (AWHONN, 2013).
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) was
founded in 1951 and today accredits more than 19,000 institutions in the United States. The
evaluation process for accreditation involves looking at the system and the quality of services
provided. Medicare and Medicaid funds cannot be dispersed to non-accredited organizations
that provide health services (Tappan, White & Weiss, 2007).
