Water loss (increase Na concentration)= diuresis
in diabetes insipidus, excessive sweating, high
fever causing sensible losses.
Water gain= excessive hypotonic or D5W IVF,
polydipsia (excessive thirst)
Na gain= consuming a lot of Na and not drinking
enough water. Getting hypertonic saline, too
much Na chloride, sodium bicarbonate, sodium
drugs, excessive Na from sea water perhaps (near
drowning).
Na loss= diarrhea, vomiting, NG suction, diuretics,
burns, wound drainage
