All your CSUF SON courses are based on Adult Learning Theory principles. Adult learning in a
classroom setting and in an Online environment can prove challenging for some students.
Unlike a traditional college classroom model where the teacher lectures and the students listen, an
adult learning environment focuses on independence, self-direction, and cooperative learning in
groups where the student is an active rather than passive participant. The role of the
‘instructor’, also significantly different, is that of a facilitator who ‘guides’ rather than
‘directs’ the learning process.
Personal accountability and responsibility for one’s own learning, and self-motivation are
fundamental and essential attributes of the successful ‘Adult Learner’.
