Diarrhea
• Abnormal frequent passage of loose stools
• Abnormal passage of stools with increased frequency, fluidity, and weight, or with
increased stool water excretion
• Acute diarrhea
o Sudden onset in a previously healthy person
o Lasts from 3 days to 2 weeks
o Self-limiting
o Resolves without sequelae
o CAUSES :
 Bacterial
 Viral
 Drug Induced
 Nutrition
 Protozoa
• Chronic diarrhea
o Lasts for more than 3 weeks
o Associated with recurring passage of diarrheal stools, fever, loss of appetite, nausea,
vomiting, weight loss, and chronic weakness
o CAUSES :
• Tumors
• Diabetes
• AIDS
• Addison’s Disease
• Hyperthyroidism
• Irritable Disease
• Inflammatory bowel syndrome
