● Therapeutic use of self: the ability to use one’s personality consciously and in full
awareness in an attempt to establish relatedness and to structure nursing interventions
● Therapeutic relationship: the nurse maximizes her skills, understanding of human
behaviors, and personal strengths to enhance the patient’s growth
● Therapeutic encounter: a limited relationship that is brief, but substantial, useful, and
important to the patient
● Transference: occurs when the pt unconsciously and inappropriately displaces onto the
nurse, feelings and behaviors related to significant figures from the patient’s past
● Countertransference: occurs when the nurse unconsciously and inappropriately displaces
onto the pt, feelings and behaviors related to significant figures from the patient’s past
● The termination phase: the final integral phase of the nurse patient relationship; discussed
during the first interview and when appropriate during the working phase
