Chapter 1: Introduction
Education-Related Research Topic
The importance of literacy and learning to read cannot be understated. Virtually every
elementary school in the world is working to help their students learn to read and become critical
and successful consumers of literature. However, specific challenges and hurdles present
themselves when those students come from a background of poverty. A recent report by the
Annie E. Casey Foundation showed that “only a fifth of low-income fourth graders were reading
at a proficient level, compared to more than half of high-income children” (Potts, 2014). What’s
even more concerning is that nearly all classes after second grade require students to be able to
use critical-reading skills for full engagement and success in the classroom. This means that four
fifths of low-income students are unable to successfully engage in classroom learning (Potts,
2014).
